Now as everybody in Britain is well aware, the weather has not been the best for boating. This has meant that our testing of this product has been a little belated. However not to be put off by a little wind and rain, Sea-Fishing.com braved the worst to review Thermoil Inc's Thermoil Battery Additive.
Thermoil mainly benefits lead based batteries, but it can be added to any battery, which has caps on it. Thermoil is clever stuff. The oil basically creates a film, which sits on top of the acid/water solution which batteries are made of. This means that the bubbles created when charging a battery break less violently on the surface. This does two jobs, firstly it reduces the amount of water lost from the battery because it reduces the misting effect and so the amount of water you lose through evaporation. The oil also stops explosions within the battery. The use of the oil means that because bubbles have to force their way through the oil in order to break there are fewer gases present and so the explosion factor is reduced greatly.
In addition to reducing the explosion and misting factors the oil also prevents corrosion. It is no good adding the oil to a battery which has corrosion, because once corrosion sets in; it can't be cured and spreads throughout the battery. However if the oil is added to a new battery the corrosion is greatly reduced. This means that with less corrosion your battery will become more efficient. Charging and discharging becomes more effective because as it not has the resistance of corrosion to overcome. The oil can be applied to a multitude of batteries, a list of which is available on the Thermoil Inc website.
So is it worth the investment?
Yes. An efficient battery is a happy battery and should serve you better and longer than a battery without the Thermoil added. The Thermoil will help reduce any chance of explosion, keeping you safe and also reduce corrosion in the battery keeping it in perfect working order.
